Where is Florianópolis?
Florianópolis is located in southern Brazil, approximately 1,140 km south of Rio de Janeiro, in the state of Santa Catarina.
The city is split between:
- Ilha de Santa Catarina (the island) — where most beaches, lagoons, surf breaks, and attractions are located
- The mainland — more residential and administrative
When people refer to “Florianópolis” or “Floripa,” they are almost always talking about the island itself, which is where visitors spend nearly all of their time.
The island is connected to the mainland by bridges, including the iconic Hercílio Luz Bridge, one of the city’s main landmarks.
Best time to visit Florianópolis
Florianópolis is a year-round destination, but the experience changes significantly by season.
Summer is hot, busy and lively with events on seemingly everyday. During winter, the temperatures drop, it rains a lot and the summer tourists leave a much quieter, local vibe on the island.

September – November (Spring)

Average temperatures:

Getting Around the Island
Floripa is surprisingly big, and with beaches across a long coastline and so many incredible places to visit, you are going to need to travel around to see the best of the island.
Uber and ride-hailing services are widely available throughout Florianópolis and are typically the easiest way to navigate locally, especially for shorter trips between beaches, restaurants, and nightlife hubs. If you plan to explore beyond the main areas, renting a car gives you maximum flexibility, though keep in mind driving times from North to South can easily stretch to 2 hours when the traffic is bad. Many of the island’s most untouched beaches and waterfalls are accessible only by hiking trails, not paved roads, so plan accordingly.
- Uber & 99: Widely available and very affordable
- Car rental: Highly recommended for the most flexibility
- Buses: Extensive but slower and can be very crowded
- Traffic: Heavy in peak summer afternoons
